Is There A God: A Timeless Question People Ask

Is there a God

The question, ‘Is there a God?’ has resonated across centuries, asked by everyone from philosophers to everyday people. It’s a question that shapes our lives in undeniable ways. People are curious about the reality of a supreme being—one who is in charge of everything and who is greater than all.

This question is relevant because, in the search for purpose, we all have to go through it. To make sense of everything, we must first understand this one thing: Is there a God?

Many philosophers have sat on their beds, wandering into the expanse of memory and thought, trying to decipher the truth of this probe. Yet they often end up where they started, forever searching for the answer.

Even me, I have bellowed on my pillow in the night, trying to get this question right. Even in my deepest depths, where I feel that I have been most wrong, I still inquire about Him? Let’s try to answer this together.

I believe we have enough wisdom and insight simply because of who we are. We are intelligent enough to reason out this timeless query. So come with me, and let’s discover together.

Why Ask "Is there a God?"

Let’s face it, no one has complete knowledge. And we must also admit that we ask some really hard questions sometimes. So answering why we ask the question is simply because we are curious of the answer. Not only that, but the question is so important that answering it could change our lives forever.

Sometimes when we pass through the most difficult moments, it is the hardest time to believe that God does exist. Take for example the father who lost his whole family to a gunman. This gun man broke into the man’s house while he was out working to provide for his family. He has been praying all his life for God to protect his loved ones while he cannot be there for them. Yet, one day he gets the most life changing call, “your wife and children have been murdered.”

For this man, he will immediately ask “then where is God?” He’ll also ask “Is God even real?” Have you ever had any of these difficult situations? Was there ever a time when it seemed God was an absentee dad who doesn’t care much?

Many people have asked the difficult question because they have had the need based on the circumstances that surround them. Yet, we can look and behold the evidence of God is everything.

The Evidence of God

There are spiritual lessons we can learn from nature that points to the existence of God.

I often go out into the wild to relax and breathe. In these sacred times, I often fill my lungs with the pure breath of life. I’ll listen to the birds churning to appease the day, and watch the trees dancing to the rhythm of the wind. The rivers will clap against the firmly unyielding stones, attesting to the grace of all that is.

I remember one time in my home country Jamaica, I went to the river and saw this bird dive beneath the river waters and came back up with a fish. What an amazing sight to take in. But, who made all these things? Did they just happen to be, or is there a vastly intelligent Creator who made them all?

The human intellect cannot ignore this reality. If there is something, it means that there has to be a creator behind it. Because of this, it makes sense to say “there is a Creator.” This Creator is who we refer to as God. Some call Him the Great One, some say He is Jehovah, but regardless of what we call Him, He is present, active and immeasurably powerful.

Some might say that this is personal opinion, but what would you say otherwise? Do you hold to the idea of evolution? There can never be a more nonsensical view of creation than evolution. Can something truly evolve out of nothing? It takes more brain power to believe in evolution than to look and see the impacts of the Great and Most Holy One.

Accepting the Reality

Where did you come from? You are amazing in every single way. The breath of life that sustains you is like an ever-present miracle. The fact that you can’t even control your own existence shows that you must be humble and accept reality. Even if you try to fight it, your fight will be futile, and reality will continue to exist.

Can you change the course of the wind? Or even further, do you know how the wind looks? What about the abyss of the ocean? Can you even navigate its depths? The truth is that humans are so limited that they have to submit. As we accept the reality of the Omnipotent Creator, we must also admit that we do not understand everything.

When life happens, we must trust in the intelligence that is ever active, and the unyielding majesty of the Great One. For the father who lost his family, he must accept that, as hard as it is, there are things he doesn’t quite understand. He doesn’t even know of the beauty of life after death.

Our Faith will help us answer the question: Is there a God?

It makes sense that faith would be the answer to this question. Although you cannot see God physically, you can discern His presence spiritually. No one can truly say, “I have seen God,” yet the evidence of His presence is all around us. Because of this, we must resolve with an attitude of faith.

The Bible says that faith is the substance of the things hoped for, and the evidence of the things not seen. How else would you describe faith? For me, faith in God means knowing that He is present even when I can’t seem to grasp His presence. Faith is the spiritual evidence of God.

Where did God come from?

If there is a God, then where did He come from? Who made God, and who made the person or entity that made Him? This is a part of the great mysterious question of all time. For God to exist, He would either have to create Himself or exist outside the constraints of time and creation. Many people give up when they face this question. This is because there is no way to answer it but by faith.

The Bible explains to us that He is the Everlasting God, who always was and always is. He exists. He has always existed and will never cease to exist. The fact that we can’t answer this question points to the reality that we don’t understand all things. When we understand that we don’t fully understand, we will submit to the reality set before us.

Final Thoughts

Answering the question of: Is there a God? can be the most life-changing experience to happen to us. For one, it will help us to better understand life around us, and also, it will help us to understand that we don’t fully understand. When you don’t understand, the God who is present understands.

Reflecting on this question isn’t just about intellectual curiosity; it’s about understanding our place in a universe that is much bigger than us. As you journey through life’s challenges, may you find peace in trusting a God who understands when you don’t. May faith guide you, even in the deepest unknowns.
