Depression feels like a weight, dragging you down into nothingness. It can cause great discomfort, especially when you don’t understand how to combat this evil force. Yes, it is an evil spirit, and it’s not in your life to bless you. Despite its presence, there is a greater Presence that can help you break every chain.
Many people struggle with depression. In fact, research shows that depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide. It steals your energy like a thief in the night and kills your motivation to move forward. But don’t lose hope. When you understand what is happening, you’ll be much better prepared to claim victory.
In this blog, I want to share with you six biblical ways to overcome your depression. As God’s chosen people, we must seek His guidance in every area of our lives. We must also remember that our battles are not merely physical—they are spiritual, instigated by the devil, and can be defeated using the weapons of God. Let’s take a closer look.
6 Biblical Ways to Overcome Your Depression
1. Wait On the Lord
But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
Isaiah 40:31
We must endure our struggles to the very end. Sometimes, they are perfectly positioned in our lives to bring out the best in us. We must recognize this and ride the tides of our storms. Paul understood this well. After being pierced with a thorn in his flesh, the Good Father did not remove it. Instead, God strengthened Paul through his suffering and brought forth exceptional glory from him. Job was no exception, nor were Elijah, David, or Jeremiah. The good news is, neither are you. You too are being trained to be God’s best.
We’ll never fully grasp the magnitude of God’s power until we are placed in difficult situations. How can we know God as a deliverer if He hasn’t delivered us from anything? Don’t you think God prepares a training environment to bring out the best in us?
Perhaps you are growing impatient as you wait on God. But Scripture encourages us to wait on the Lord and be of good courage. When you wait in His timing, God will deliver you in due time. You must understand the principle of seasons: every season has a purpose. This is your season to endure and to wait on God. While you wait, remember to fast and pray.
2. Fast and Pray
Fasting and praying are essential elements of a believer’s spiritual nourishment. We must fill our spiritual lives with the sustenance of prayer and fasting. As we do this, we remain connected to the source of the strength that sustains us.
We can learn about the power of prayer from the story of Hannah in 1 Samuel. Hannah experienced deep depression due to her unmet need, but her breakthrough was just waiting on her prayerful praise. The Bible says that Hannah wept bitterly as she prayed to God for a child. After her heartfelt prayer, God was faithful in granting her request. Hannah’s prayer moved the hand of God.
“In her deep anguish, Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly.”
1 Samuel 1:10
Are you praying enough? As you face your troubles, are you falling to your knees to fast and pray? We all become complacent when it comes to prayer, but it is often our complacency that hinders us from receiving what God has for us. God is waiting for us to pour out our hearts in prayer.
3. Renew Your Mind with Scripture
We are products of the way we think. If you dwell on depressing, fearful, and belittling thoughts, your life will bear these negative fruits. However, if you focus on good things, your life will produce good fruit. Therefore, we must pay careful attention to our thoughts as we navigate the difficult terrain of depression. One way to align our thinking is by meditating on the Word of God.
“But whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night.”
– Psalm 1:2
The Word of God has the power to heal and transform our thoughts. Even though depression often comes with negative thinking, we can counter it by thinking rightly. This can renew our minds and clarify our perspectives. When we feel alone, we can meditate on Psalm 34, which reminds us that God is close to the brokenhearted.
By reading and meditating on the promises of God, we keep ourselves in perfect peace. Remember that the steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, and as you reflect on biblical ways to overcome your depression, trust that the Word of God will spark life within you.
4. Trust God’s Plan and Timing
God’s timing is always perfect. Many times, our worries stem from impatience and a lack of acceptance of God’s timing. But if we take a step back and begin to trust in His timing, our depression can turn into praise. God knows the right time to move us forward or hold us back. While we cannot see as far ahead as God does, we can trust His guidance. Wherever God leads us is the safest place for us to go.
As we confront the reality of our depression, it can be difficult to see beyond the present moment. However, trusting in God’s plan brings peace. Jeremiah reminds us:
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
– Jeremiah 29:11
Trust that God is with you, even in your pain, and that He has a purpose for your life. Healing sometimes takes time, but God’s timing is perfect, and He will see you through. Will you wait on God?
5. Expect God's Best
As we wait on God, fast, and pray, we must expect His very best. As you seek biblical ways to overcome your depression, you must believe that you will receive God’s best. Know that God is always working for good, even when our circumstances suggest otherwise.
When we understand the power of our expectations, we will begin to consistently anticipate positive outcomes. Most often, the things we expect are the things we are placing our faith in, and these will manifest before our eyes. David understood this well, which is why he said in Psalm 27:13:
“I would have lost heart unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.”
As we move forward, we too must believe that we will witness God’s goodness. Our gracious God will reward us in due season. Will you not expect God’s goodness while patiently waiting for it?
6. Dwelling in Thanksgiving
We must learn to give thanks to the Lord, knowing that He is good and that His mercies endure forever. Even in the midst of our depression, we must focus on the blessings in our lives and give thanks. There is always something to be thankful for. Our first breath of fresh air in the morning is enough reason to give thanks; it means that we are alive, well, and that God has sustained us.
Often, we focus so much on the things that are going wrong that we neglect the amazing things God is doing in our lives. But we must shift our perspective. The Bible encourages us to give thanks in all circumstances. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
Gratitude can break the cycle of negative thinking by helping us focus on what God has done and is continuing to do in our lives. We can keep reminders of God’s goodness as evidence of His faithfulness and love. As we expect God’s goodness and wait on Him, may we give thanks for all things.
